An unsung gem
I bought this lens because I needed an f2.8 lens for indoor shots but had reservations: the old noisy SAM motor, less than top notch build quality. I put it through its paces this weekend at an event, and I'm really, really happy I got this lens. The image quality that it produces is worth the money and all the other quibbles. Super sharp pictures, & not just in the center, either. AF is fast enough for me: no problems with "hunting." It's not the lightest of lenses at 1.25 pounds, but it's half the weight of the legendary Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 (and less than half the cost too.) 28mm is plenty wide for landscape or indoor shots. I've yet to feel that I missed shots because of 28mm focal length, & if I need a wider focal length, I have other lenses for that. Minimum focus distance is about 15 inches, which is great for when grandkids suddenly move close by with cute expressions.I was tempted to get the Tamron version of this lens (half the price), but if there is a problem with back or front focus, there isn't the option to Micro Focus Adjust that lens with my camera (Sony a99ii). Plus the Sony version accesses all 399 AF points.Manual focus only works by using the switch on the lens, & the focus ring isn't the smoothest, nor does it have a nice wide throw like my Rokinons. But it works well enough that you won't have any trouble with manual focusing. On the whole, this is an excellent lens. Not perfect, and someone who shoots demanding photography will be happier paying up for the smoother, quieter, zippier Zeiss. But for indoor family shots & general travel photography, it's a gem. I'm not sure why isn't more popular in the Sony discussion forums, because the image quality is worth raving about.

So far so good
I am a very amateur photographer. Very avid reader and shooter. Have a small personal studio. Been hooked on Sony, will probably continue to purchase every new Sony product. Love the user interface, very consistent on upgrades. I have an HX1 that I used on a trip to Egypt - awesome panoramas, great quality in high light situations. Also have an A350 with wide angle, 50mm 2.8, mid and long 2.8 teles. Always trying to improve composition and quality. Having used the stock lens on a Sony A350 and being very frustrated in low light, this lens has been a joy to use. 800/1600 ISO crops really well. AF is fast. Still wondering if this lens is worth $300 more than the Tamron 28-75 2.8. But it is a Sony.

An excellent general service lens. Easy to like.
Well made. Good materials. Professional appearance. Decent price. Easy to use. Gives superb results, especially when used with a Sony A99.YES I WOULD recommend this lens to a friend.

This lens takes great pictures on my Sony a99
Not quite as wide as the Zeiss 28-75mm but half the price and the pictures are outstanding. I have many Minolta legend lenses even the Minolta breer cans and secret handshake lenses this is newer technology and match the resolution of the newer cameras. I use mine on an a99 and I get superb results. Although I would like to compare it to the Zeiss this is a great lens I am glad I bought it.

Great lens, just pricey
A very quiet, well designed lens. It has become my go to lens for most applications. Great in low light and small spaces. The only drawback is the price...there are other lenses with similar features for much less. But if you are looking for a rugged, well made lens, this is the one!

Super clear and Great value
This was an identical replacement lens -I accidentally cracked a lens and needed to replace my portrait lens ASAP. This is a food price for an A mount lens as my original was purchased in 2012 for twice this amount.

For a decent price you have a good all purpose A-Mount objective
Good product, smooth auto-focus (a little bit noisy), light weight. For a decent price you have a good all purpose A-Mount objective. The only issue is with the cover which is not fitting very well and drops down very often.

Seems to work better now. Other Alpha lenses dis not have this ...
Lens would not correctly focus when using the auto focus option on my Sony Alpha 77II.Had to go thru the AF Micro Adjust option on the camera..Seems to work better now.Other Alpha lenses did not have this problem. Lens is well constructed and easy to use.
