Q: I am looking for a deicer that does not rust, does this one rust at all? the current one I have leaves rust in the water.

There is a galvanized wire protector that goes on the cord to keep animals from chewing on it. I remove that as ours is for chicken water, then it leaves no rust. It might not if you left the wore on since it’s galvanized, but we add vinegar which would corrode it. The rest guard is stainless, so shouldn’t rust.

Q: Will this work in my outdoor fountain?

Works perfect for our bird bath. Supposedly it will keep up to 15 gallons unfrozen? Maybe you could fill the fountain and dip it out with a gallon bucket to measure how many gallons are in there before you purchase? We like it.

Q: Will this heater fail if the bucket goes dry?

Great question! . . . after reading and re-reading the pamphlet, to be on the safe side I would disconnect the unit, they indicate not to use an extension cord and to unplug when not in use__ so to protect the integrity of the unit, don't think wise to let it sit while active w/o being in water! try Allied Precision Industries, Inc. (API) online Models DT250,BDT250 AND DT5000__ best I can offer! :o)
