Q: Does this light up to let you know when to replace it?

It doesn't light up, but it has a little window on the top that shines green when you first get it. Then eventually, the red starts coming in from the side and grows larger. When the red completely takes over the green, you replace it. You don't have to buy the base every time. I wait until the switch from filter to non filter gets a little difficult to move over. The green/red circle is on the base, and it will reset the moment you put in a replacement filter.

Q: Does anyone know if this actually filters out toxins as well as the Brita-manufacturer one? Sometimes non-name brand product don’t perform as well.
