Good BUT Beware the "Rainbow Effect" - Epson Compared In Review - remote sucks
This projector is a very nice piece of equipment, except for the absurdly cheap remote. It is very bright - I never really needed it brighter than eco mode at all. Great colors and hardly any screen door effect. Relatively quiet. I have owned both Epsons at work and Optomas in the past. Matter of fact my last projector for home theater was a 8 year old Optoma - and I never noticed the rainbow effect with it at all, even though it used the same technology. Maybe it was the lower contrast ratio (400 to 1) versus 20,000 to 1 in this latest tech. So I was not concerned at all when I ordered an Optoma about rainbow artifacts - I have used an Optoma and never noticed them. But on this unit - I see them all the time - even in daylight. It is so bad I can no longer even watch it for more than an hour or so before I start going batty. On subtitles it is screamingly obvious. It is very strange to me, since it was never an issue before with my old Optoma. I am packing this up and sending it back. Just ordered an Epson to replace it. I prefer Optoma pictures in general, but the rainbow effect is nonexistent in the 3 chip Epson projectors. You may not experience the rainbows at all. If so, I would highly recommend this projector - it is a great price and super bright. But if you or yours is sensitive to the rainbows - I would look at Epson....The remote is exactly the type of remote you would get with a $5.99 piece of electronics at Walmart. Thin and cheap and small with buttons that are just raised bumps. Worse yet - the one that came with mine ate a set of batteries (watch type) every few days. Optoma should be ashamed of including this little 39 cent remote. BTW: If you buy this - the remote is hidden in the storage bag pocket.... I almost couldn't locate it....UPDATE: The Epson arrived (VS 335W) and I have had a few days to compare. The Epson has 2800 lumens versus 3200 with this - but I can't see much a difference in the brightness. Both are plenty bright, even in a room with curtains pulled in daylight. The Epson is smaller and easier to set up and focus. The Epson throws a wider image in a shorter distance and the zoom range is way greater than the Optoma. The Epson comes with an excellent full size remote that works 3 times the distance of the remote with the Optoma. The most noticeable image difference is that the Optoma has superior black levels to the Epson. The blacks with the Epson are not quite as deep - and black levels affect all colors which gives the Optoma a slightly better overall image, in my opinion. I have read in forums this is the price one pays for the 3 chip technology. Will the slightly diminished black levels make me go back to an Optoma or Viewsonic or BenQ? Nope - they all use the same technology and the rainbow artifacts to me are not worth the slightly better image. Once you start noticing them, they are a nightmare. Some forum searching also revealed others who have noticed increased rainbows with the newest generation Optoma projectors. So Viewsonic or BenQ may be better, but I am done with looking, as the Epson is excellent. . Truly either projector I got will knock your socks off compared to even the largest of TVs. They both look great. So if you (and your family and guests) can't see the rainbows - I would go with the Optoma - if your prime goal is the best movie image they do edge out the Epson…BTW: I bought both these with my own funds - so this is a “REAL” review. I have been so very mislead by “free product” reviews that I now pay very little attention to them. If Optoma gave me this projector for free - do you really think I would have sent it back and paid for an Epson? Right there is the big difference between a real review and a Vine or “discounted/free product” review. The Good: Having used LCD projectors for our home entertainment ...
The Good :Having used LCD projectors for our home entertainment since 2004, It was time to retire my projector due to the cost of bulbs. Mind you I had a 3,000 lumens XGA unit that supported multiple inputs and auto adjusted for wide screen and high Diff. Just 30-days ago I returned an LED projector because it could not respond fast enough on quality adjustments along with a mired of other things.1) I am pleased to report 1-minute after getting my new Optoma X312 3,200 Lumens DLP Projector out of the box I was surprisingly elated. This unit automatically checks for sources that are connected. It supports composite video, VGA,RS-232, HDMI, USB and S Video. The internal speaker is adequate for a quick setup and share environment. I have my unit connected to a powerful boom box to give me a movie feel.2) We have our projector in the living room where there is plenty of ambient light (God’s Sunshine) is coming in on both sides. Normally we close blinds or pull drapes to block out sun rays. It is scary to know that man can make something such as this 3200 lumens unit that can cut right through the sunlight with a clear crisp picture. There was no need for us to close anything. This will be a good device when sharing presentations and a need to have a lighted room is required. Because of the brightness, when evening arrived we set the projector to economy brightness which saves bulb life and is much easier on the viewers eyes. It performed much better than my old 3,000 lumens LCD projector.3) The colors are exact. There is no cartooning of flesh tone unless one has a poor video source such as a movie that was poorly copied. This thing gives LCD Flat Screens a run for the money. The system menus are very colorful and easy to read. The unit responds rapidly on any adjustments. The Bad:1) Now, the following assumptions are based on using a 3,000 LCD projector NEC VT770 since 2004 that had very similar specs to the X312 with the exception of HDMI input. We do lots of web streaming from a number of sources. I knew I needed XGA support assuming like my old LCD projector this one would make the same adjustments. It didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, the quality of the picture is exceptional and I plan to keep this unit.My projector is about 12-feet from a plain white surface wall. I am achieving a comparable 65-inch diagonal Flat Screen area of viewing. When switching to a HDMI input source (from my Laptop) I’m not seeing any noticeable changes of picture quality. If I adjust the computer resolution to higher than 1028 x 768 the projector adjusts to ECO mode with good quality and viewing size is smaller. Apparently the X312 supports wide screen but with-in the throw box of the lens. Other XGA projectors adjust the viewing size to even wider than regular lens area. I can live with this but this ability will be missed. It’s great on live sporting events.I found video sources that are true wide screen on YouTube display better with the VGA input than HDMI because in full theater mode the entire viewing area is filled. This doesn’t happen on HDMI setting especially if a non HDMI video is played from YouTube. Users will see Top and bottom and sometimes left and right black box areas. Users who have not had the experience of electronic wide-screen adjustment won’t notice this lack of capability.Ugly:1) The remote control is a little small (Too small). It fell out of the package and I didn’t know what it was. I would suggest making it longer and keep the same perspective of development. It’s a good thing that the control panel on top of the unit responses well and menus are displayed at least 7-secs before disappearing.I highly recommend this unit. The price is right and the bang for the buck is excellent!Good job OptomaIt is now August 2016. I have had this unit over a year. I have one annoying concerned that Optoma offered to repair with return of the device. After powering down unit, I have to unplug power cord for 10 or 14 seconds if I desire to power up again. Not sure why this is happening. Everything else as advertised is holding true. I have never seen the rainbow affect some talk about on DLP units. The device gives excellent service. I use it 8 to 10 hours daily.

Great for home theater!
I love this projecter. I use it in a home theater, yet like it because it's also portable with included carry case. This projecter is bright with very good color and contrast. Can easily watch with lights on although better with them off of course. All HD content looks great. Nice and sharp. It was super easy to setup with remote. Be sure to go thru menus to optimize for your purposes. I have it sitting on a bookshelf (with another small fan that blows on it..although I'm sure would be fine without it). I keep the internal speaker off and use external sound system. It works great. I think the adjustable feet could have been better. They are just 3 screws that screw in/out with rubber bumpers but seem to work fine. Would have preferred 4 larger ones that are more robust. I've had no issues with ghosting, artifacts, etc. It auto detects HDMI input with just small delay. I also bought a cheap external HDMI switcher to connect more sources. Works fine with it. Couldn't be happier...can't beat this for the money.
